AMD Expands Home Networking Product Portfolio With Industry's First HomePNA-Compliant Single-Chip Physical Layer Device Provides Inexpensive Phoneline Connectivity For Peripheral Devices, Information Appliances SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999-- AMD today announced the HomePHY(tm) device, a single chip that enables PC peripheral and information appliance manufacturers to integrate support for the widely-endorsed Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA) technology into their products. AMD's HomePHY device supports physical layer (PHY) functions for both HomePNA phoneline networking and the 802.3 standard for 10Mbps Ethernet networking. This dual PHY layer functionality enables a device such as a USB networking connector to offer support for either home phoneline or Ethernet networking in a single device. The HomePHY device has been certified as compliant with HomePNA Specification 1.0 for phoneline networking and can be integrated into printers, scanners, set-top boxes, Web phones, residential gateways, cable modems, and other PC peripherals to enable phoneline connectivity. Integrating the HomePHY chip into peripheral devices expands the type of product capable of supporting home phoneline networking beyond the PC, creating new classes of home networking products and furthering the concept of the ''Networked Home.'' AMD also announced today that Tut Systems plans to integrate the HomePHY into their Expresso family of products, and Peracom Networks, Inc., a supplier of peripheral connectivity and desktop networking solutions, plans to use the HomePHY device in future HomePNA-compliant products. ''The HomePHY device brings inexpensive HomePNA connectivity to a new class of products, expanding the power and utility of home networks beyond traditional PC-to-PC connections,'' said Dr. Laila Razouk, vice president of the Network Products Division at AMD. The HomePHY device can determine the appropriate network connection, either HomePNA or Ethernet, and can intelligently switch to the appropriate protocol. Pricing and Availability The Am79C901 is available now for samples in a 68-pin PLCC package. The device is $7.90 in 10,000-piece quantities.
