Not just that - I don't think Intel seriously considered a Whitney-type chip until the MediaGX chip set had been on the market for about a year.

That gave Intel only 1 1/2 years to pull this off - and as you noted, Cyrix/NSM has released NOTHING - except code names - in that 2 1/2 year time frame.
