I don't know if it's simpler, but it keeps the CPU designers FOCUSED on maximizing CPU performance, handling generally "known" CPU issues.
The details of grafting a complex 3D graphics processor onto the CPU, and interfacing the two - along with the complex bus interactions - are then avoided.

Instead, Intel took the output of two groups - the 440BX and the i740/752 designers - and merged them. This allowed all the details and implementation difficulties to be worked out among those two groups, avoiding interfering with the critical path of CPU architecture & design.
