Paul,

Re:"A thousand servers is a lot of servers for one room - but if you look at the numbers - Compaq apparently shipped 150,000 servers in Q199 and Dell shipped 100,000 Servers in Q199.

See: Message 9136074

Thus, 1000 Servers for Intel is a NIT !"

Maybe you are right, but if we are only talking 1000 servers/Qtr lets say then this business is unlikely to get too big.

On the other hand if the model becomes where small/medium business outsource their whole IT operation the numbers get very large quickly. And once ADSL kicks in, there is no reason why the departmental server is not replaced by renting time/resources at a data center. And the data center offers scalability, and 24/7 support and potentially lower prices as you only pay for what you use as opposed to setting up and maintaining an-inhouse operation.

I tend to think that this is a major long term initiative and could be troubling for folks like IBM/CPQ/HP etc. Pure play direct suppliers that make their money on razor thin hardware margins will love it - folks like Dell, Gateway.

Kash Johal
