Paul,

A 466 MHz Celeron has a SpecInt95 of about 17.0.

Matbe you should say that the Celeron is just as fast as a 21164..... or a PII, or a PIII, or a Xeon.

Why would a large number of developers run out and buy a 700 MHz Alpha
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
machine that is not much faster than a 466 MHz Celeron machine - when ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
the
installed base of Celeron/x86 compatible machines is measured in the
HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF UNITS - and GROWING at over a 100
million units per year?

That's a good question and something I am not in total agreement
with. I do think it will help though as it establishes an entry
level position allowing many to port to Alpha. Of course a recompile
will be in order to get the most out of 21264. Merced has a trickier
problem as I pointed out earlier and am pretty sure you can't
address:

-- How does Merced get any Linux support at the common user level
(where a good deal of Linux thrives) if the cheapest Merced
box at intro is $7000+?

Merced won't do great on IA32 binaries, etc.

Secondly, the EV57 will do well compared to Celeryon or other
Intel processors in fp and so there is a nice science/engineering
niche.

I suspect 21264 will get a whole lot more popular this summer
with .28 micron boxes in abundance. What I expect (but
have found no mention of) to see is a $3500-$5000 (and maybe
$2000 box) box at 700-800 MHz that will be real popular. Popular
for several reasons.. no competition from Intel or others. This should be a 35 SpecInt, 60 SpecFp box. Like Intel backfills, expect to see a 21264 back-fill the 1000-$1500 price band by year-end.

So I agree with you here that the less than $1000 Alpha Linux box
isn't a barn-burner but it fills a critical Alpha need. Alpha
becomes like x86, boxes at every price band. But don't expect
Intel to get serious performance competition for 3-4 months, but
when that time comes Intel won't have a corresponding answer until
Merced, late 2000 and at a MUCH higher price point.
