Ericsson CEO Says Has 40% Mkt Shr For Mobile Systems

STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)--Swedish telecommunications group LM Ericsson AB (ERICY) has a global market share of around 40% for mobile systems which is more than double the No. 2, Ericsson's Chief Executive Sven-Christer Nilsson said at an investors's seminar Saturday.

Nilsson didn't specify which company held the No. 2 position.

"And after the acquisition of Qualcomm we can offer all mobile standards and that has further strengthened out position," the CEO said, speaking only two days after Ericsson reported a 50% drop in first quarter earnings, mainly a result from dwindling profits from handset sales.

In a recent deal that settled some patent disputes Ericsson acquired Qualcomm Inc.'s (QCOM) operations within mobile systems.

He said that Ericsson so far this year has shown six new handset models to be introduced during this year and that this should show in sales figures for the second half.

"We have showed that we are prepared to be one of two leading mobile phone makers," he said.

Nilsson also said that Ericsson estimates that there will be one billion users each of mobile telephones, internet and fixed lines by 2004.

"This development is going even faster than we have anticipated before," he said.
