OT OT OT OT Arthur: I know a little about adsl because I was an investor in Amati Communications before they were bought out by Texas Instruments. They hold the patents for the ansi standard line coding scheme called Discrete Multi Tone (DMT). (Other dsl players include AWRE, PAIR, ORCT and WSTL.) Briefly, the RBOC's (Regional Bell Operating Companies) are in the early stages of deploying ADSL. They are still trying to figure out how to implement it and how to charge for it. There are some who say that they have missed an opportunity by waiting this long to deploy it. They have allowed the cable companies to catch up. As for FTTC, it simply refers to two-way fiber optic cable to the "curb" in front of your house. Most of this country has one way coaxial cable to the curb but it is gradually being replaced. I live in Nashua, NH and they have been ripping up the existing cable and replacing it with two way. Right now, the jury is still out as to whether Bell Atlantic will offer ADSL service or Media One will offer cable modem service first in this area. Of the two, I'd rather have ADSL since cable modems are shared bandwidth and there are data security issues associated with them. The techology to get this service from your curb to your home is sometimes referred to as "Last mile" techonlogy. In both cases, RBOC and Cable company, they are hoping to be your one-stop shopping place for telecommunications, i.e. phone, cable, long-distance, ISP etc. For more information on the various technologies you might try referring to some of the threads in the Communications area on SI. A couple of threads to check out include " 'Last mile technologies' - Let's discuss them here' ", and "ADSL (G-Lite) for Dummies". Even the old "Amati Investors" thread contains a lot of useful information from some really knowledgeable technical folks.
