The bid is sometimes higher than the ask in pre=market trading. Actually, when the stock is going up, it almost always is. This is a trading pattern that you can follow to show stocks that will go up fast at the open.

In normal trading, its sometimes a signaly that it is volatile or moving very fast and sometimes signifies a lot of buying and MMs screwing up, or trading irregularities. Really, just a mess..But a good indicator.
