The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, April 24, edition that Paul Godin,
Bid.Com International's chairman and chief executive officer, has been forced to
hire a security firm after receiving threats. The Globe's Mark Evans writes that the
need for protection comes in the wake of the sharp decline of Bid.Com's stock
last week. Bid.Com stock fell on its Nasdaq Stock Market debut Tuesday and
the decline gained momentum a day later when the company's underwriter,
Yorkton Securities, downgraded its shares. The fervour surrounding Bid.Com
reflects the dark side of Internet-mania that few investors seem to realize or care
about: The reality that these stocks can tumble as fast as they rocket forward. In
the eye of the storm is a research report written by Yorkton analyst Mark Pavan.
Yorkton helped Bid.Com raise almost $30-million through three private
placements. Mr. Pavan shocked the market by downgrading Bid.Com to an
"underperform" from a "speculative buy." It was a rare move by an analyst whose
firm is the underwriter, says The Globe.
