Re: CTXS and CSCO Relationship

jkb,
More news on the agreement between Citrix and Cisco to make ICA over the Internet work more efficiently. Not knowing the technical details as well as you, kind of surprising how much help Cisco is giving a company like Citrix. Either Cisco sees something in Citrix that apparently they don't see in others, or Citrix is very good at building important relationships.

You would just think with the HUGE amount of traffic, from all vendors, that pass through Cisco routers, that they wouldn't do press releases espousing how they are building in code to help pass Citrix traffic more efficiently.

Cisco and Citrix Enable ASPs andEnterprises to Gain Higher Quality of Service for InternetApplications

SAN JOSE, Calif. Nov. 2, 1999-- Citrix ICA(R) and Cisco NBAR Technology Enhance Application Access and Performance over the Internet and Wide Area Networks

Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced that it will co-develop technologies with Citrix Systems, Inc. as part of the Cisco Hosted Applications Initiative to better address the needs of Application Service Providers (ASPs) and enterprise customers by providing enhanced capabilities for application performance over the Internet. This joint initiative enables ASPs to offer higher value-added services and levels of guarantees on applications hosted on Cisco networking infrastructure and Citrix server-based computing software.

Through a Cisco technology-based network and Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR), enterprises can achieve the highest level of performance for business applications by classifying and prioritizing Citrix Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) traffic (see related press release issued today). Citrix will support Cisco NBAR technology with its enhanced version of Citrix ICA in future application server software products. With Cisco NBAR and Citrix ICA technology, traffic within a Citrix ICA session can be classified most appropriately for a particular quality of service (QoS) mechanism. For example, a Citrix print or batch job which is less sensitive to delay, can be treated differently than a Citrix screen display update which must be received by the client quickly for a transparent user experience.

"Our relationship with Citrix, a cornerstone technology enabler for ASPs, is key to our Cisco Hosted Applications Initiative in providing higher levels of application performance across the Cisco Internet infrastructure," said Eugene Lee, vice president of marketing for the Cisco Small/Medium line of business. "Helping to build application transaction service levels with our NBAR technology is the first step in this relationship, which enables enterprise customers to gain fast, reliable and economical connections to business-critical applications."

"This relationship between Cisco, the backbone of the Internet, and Citrix, the lifeblood for application service providers is a perfect match," said Mark Templeton, president and chief executive officer for Citrix. "The ability to prioritize ICA traffic is a significant advance for the ASP market-in essence, we have created the 'fast lane' for accessing hosted applications. It is a better and quicker way to enable customers to gain fast and high-performance access to applications, whether it's across the WAN, over a virtual private network or via the public Internet."

Cisco NBAR technology and Citrix ICA benefit two groups of customers: application service providers and large enterprise customers.
