There is a maxim in business: bad money drives out good. Does this work with culture as well?

Ortega y Gasset assures us that nothing is as contagious as bad taste. Is that an intellectual snob credential, or what?

But I like Jimi Hendrix.

Luckily Ammo is already 16 so I have high hopes. He is a puzzle to us. His grades are terrible, yet he decided he wanted to play the Moonlight Sonata (1st Mov't), but he doesn't play the piano so he asked me to show him how it goes. It was the most amazing thing. He learned it measure by measure-- the whole thing. You would think it would sound really bad, but he also somehow-- maybe from listening to a recording -I think he has Van Cliburn's--plays it with technique. And he memorized MacBeth's dagger speech in one night becuase "he wanted to". Now he is doing it for his monologue in THeatre and is adding fake blood with a little tube to a dagger so he can self-mutilate during the speech to show his state of mind.
I hope I'm not missing some serious signs here. On rereading that sounds really weird.
