ATI to build system on chip...

biz.yahoo.com

Here's my opinion on the matter...

ATI makes a ton off of the lost cost market by being the cheapest chip with the widest available features. The mobo manufacturers such as emachines all save cost by putting this thing directly on the board (eliminate graphics port and card, save $$$).

With Whitney, the manufacturers all have an even cheaper, higher performing solution to use. This leaves ATI nowhere except to follow suit. It also saves enough money to keep these low cost manufacturers from using Cyrix processors (with only $30 difference between 300Mhz Celerons and M2s). Cyrix needs socket 370 to survive or we'll be seeing some even bigger losses shortly (Whitney).

Right now, TNT (soon TNT2) and Voodoo3 are grabbing the high end video, with ATI on the low end. If NSM can deliver the an S370 processor for Whitney and a PCOAC, then they have all of the low end.
