Do: Everything that JohnG says (I'm kidding, but he is a valuable source of reliable info).
Follow: the short threads on SI, reading the posts can teach you a lot.
Don't: short RRRR this morning at 15 1/2, it will be higher this afternoon. Damn!

With a broker like Datek you just put in a sell order for stock you don't have. I don't think they even need a special agreement (unlike margin). Don't do it till you understand the risks and how it works. In theory you can take an unlimited loss on a short position. If the stock gaps up strong you can losed more than you put down. This is without using margin. With large cap stocks this is unlikely. Don't even think about options till you understand fully how thery work, though losses are limited for buying options you can lose much faster.
