True, and the technique used to attach itself to files is a little more covert than usual (by filling up the slack space), anti-virus programs with updated .dat files can now specifically look for the coding used by the virus. Although it doesn't change the size of the file, the anti-virus software is 'trained' to look for it all the same.

I would just make sure that the virus is on the list from the manufacturer of the anti-virus software. Considering how popular this virus is, I would assume the major players could detect it.
