Hey jw,

The virus detection in the BIOS is for as you mentioned, boot viruses. If something tried to change the boot record of your primary drive, and the anti-virus protection was enabled, a warning would flash indicated the intended boot sector write.

If you are re-installing Windows, or reformating your drive, you'll see that box pop up.
