No-no--the libraries I meant ARE their personal ones with, yes, the elegant matching sets chosen I'm sure by their decorator. The PUBLIC libraries fight desperately to maintain enough funding to stay open.

Do they really do that (read a chapter or two and make notes in the margins?) or are you being very snide?

THey would sneer at my books and throw them out--- they all come from library sales and the half-price book store and are all extremely unattractive.

I must admit that I sometimes buy books, fully intending to read them, but never getting around to them. Others I pick up, start, and then put down to wait for a more auspicious time. They do look nice sitting on the shelf. I think of them as a gardener thinks of their jars of tomatoes and jam, something I have stored up for a rainy day. Does that make me pretentious? How would it look any different if I were?
