Lorne:

Your piece answers the question. In the 1996-7 period gold traded on its fundamentals that demand exceeded new supply by a considerable margin. The same holds true for today, with the exception that the cb's have taken an active roll in releasing gold into the market to make up any supply shortfalls. Further should gold respond to an economic crisis of some sort, the cb's have come up with a litany of strategically placed reports of sales to keep further price rises in check.
During the earlier period, I viewed each company I invested in independently for a return on investment. This is quite different than scouring the news for any indication of doom and gloom that will cause my holdings to appreciate.
