I was simply trying to say that it read to me as a dismissal of the other side's causal argument - i.e. that gun control reduces violence. I hope I've made my "non-position" (for the moment anyway) a bit more consistent. As for drawing conclusions from sociological data - I agree with your contention that is isn't easy or even approaching unambiguous.
