I don't suppose there is a "rational" explanation, in the sense that we would say to people who were plotting mass murder, "oh, right, go ahead." Still, this massacre seems different than the one in Springfield, Oregon, or the "I don't like Mondays" one, or the McDonald's one. Those were just insane. There does seem to be some "logic" to this one, the accounts in the newspapers have picked up on it, some creepy vendetta.

Being in love with death is a common theme in adolescent art, in the 19th century a lot of teenagers killed themselves after reading The Sorrows of Young Werther. Romeo and Juliet isn't nearly as interesting as King Lear and The Tempest once you're over 30.

I do think that if everyone adult were (at least potentially) armed, people would have better control of their impulses. I can't say whether the number of people who were better able to act out on their murderous impulses would balance it out, though.

<<. Let's look at Columbine. There was no effort to prepare an escape for the killers. They apparently planned to kill themselves or hijack a plane and crash it into New York City >>

Seems like all plans lead to death, together. Maybe they were homosexual lovers. Maybe if they hadn't met they would have been ok. Maybe if this hadn't happened we would have two more Ted Bundys. Lots of maybes there.
