I've made that point to several friends (you could use Israel as an example, too - though they have terrorism). They shrug it off as a meaningless thing.
Don't forget ONE IMPORTANT FACT: when those assault weapons are issued, they have to take lessons on management of the weapon.

When I got my 1st gun, my parents made me take classes on how to handle it. Makes all the difference.
