Apache crashes in Tirana, Albania
United Press International - April 26, 1999 19:46
WASHINGTON, April 26 (UPI) - The White House is accepting the crash
of a U.S. Apache helicopter outside Tirana, Albania, as one of the
inevitable risks of combat.

The helicopter - one of 23 Apaches just dispatched to the region -
crashed and burst into flames as it was completing a training mission at
10:20 p.m. local time (4:40 p.m. EDT).

Pentagon spokesman Lt. David Gai said tonight the helicopter's two
crewmen apparently escaped the wreckage with only minor injuries. Both
were medevaced to the 212 MASH unit at Tirana Airport and are believed
to be in good condition.

A White House spokesman said officials there are primarily concerned
with the well-being of the crew and are withholding further comment
pending an investigation. ''This is a reminder that any military
operation has its risks,'' he said.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown and under investigation,
but Gai said military authorities do not believe it was caused by enemy
fire.

The attack helicopter is part of ''Task Force Hawk,'' soon expected
to enter the fray against Yugoslav troops in Kosovo. The operation was
slated to have 24 Apaches, in addition to tanks, fighting vehicles, and
artillery.

One Apache remains in Italy with a maintenance problem, while 23 are
based near Tirana. Heavy rains slowed their deployment, since their
intended landing field is muddy.
