Lucent Technologies to Supply W-CDMA
Equipment for NTT Docomo's
Nation-Wide Next-Generation Wireless
Network in Japan

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1999--Lucent Technologies today announced that it
has been chosen by NTT DoCoMo to supply W-CDMA (wideband-code division multiple
access) equipment for NTT DoCoMo's next-generation wireless commercial network in Japan.
Lucent will provide two major components of the network - the Base Transceiver Stations
(BTS) and the Radio Network Controller / Multimedia Processing Equipment (RNC/MPE).

The equipment Lucent will provide to NTT DoCoMo uses a modular design. The BTS can be
equipped with up to twelve transceivers per single base station frame. The Lucent BTS is ideal
for implementation in a growing network, as extra transceivers can be added when needed. This
reduces initial network investment and adds a degree of flexibility and investment protection to
the network. The RNC/MPE provides BTS control and multimedia signal processing
capabilities.

Capitalizing on Lucent's CDMA experience, resources are dedicated to this project from the
U.S., U.K., and Japan. Bell Laboratories engineers in Yokosuka work with DoCoMo to ensure
that the performance of the commercial products exceeds DoCoMo's expectations. Lucent's
Product Realization Center in Mount Olive, NJ (US) in conjunction with its GSM headquarters
in Swindon, UK provide development and manufacturing support.

''NTT DoCoMo is leading the way in the deployment of next-generation wireless technology and
Lucent is delighted to be part of the team,'' said Jim Brewington, president of Lucent's Wireless
Networks Group. ''NTT DoCoMo has an aggressive timetable for the commercialization of its
third generation network. We are committed to supporting this important customer through this
critical next phase.''

Lucent Technologies is the only 3G system vendor to have announced collaboration with
network operators around the world involving multiple technologies. In addition to the NTT
DoCoMo (W-CDMA) project, Lucent Technologies is involved with joint DDI/IDO
(cdma2000) trials in Japan; Vodafone (UMTS) in the UK; and Sprint PCS and Bell Atlantic
Mobile (cdma2000) in the US.

Lucent Technologies is developing a wide-range of 3G integrated mobile network solutions that
encompass every major aspect of future wireless network service offerings. These include
