AOL would be getting their hands on Comcast and Media One. That is not a start, as you would argue. That is ALL they would be getting.
We could only hope so. Dont forget that the @home partnerships are not permanent. Comcast is proving that. If AOL had a stake in RR they have a stake in the opportunity to gain more cable access (including leverage into TWX). AOL has shown in its DSL deals that it is more than willing to take broadband in whatever pieces it can get. A national solution is impossible.
they sure as hell never thought that they would have to BUY Media One, and take a controlling interest in Comcast to get into it.
I'll bet there are a lot more ways to structure things than that. AOL doesnt want the wires, they want to own @homes & RR's positions at Comcast and UMG. They want to be the ISP/Content provider. I suspect they'd be very happy just owning a major portion of UMG's RR share in trade for AOL shares.
I wonder if they got that position how they'd feel about "open access"? A sudden change of tune I'd bet.
Eric

One more wrinkle (obvious but I missed it) in this whole AOL/Comcast theory we are playing with is that arch-enemies AOL and MSFT would have a joint ownership of pieces of Comcast and RR.
I doubt anyone could survive the clash of those two egos. Maybe it's not such a likely possibility after all.
Far more likely Comcast would just go to MSFT for the extra $. One thing MSFT has is TONS of cas, and they have already sold their soul to that devil anyhow.
Either way UMG looks like a sure bet. Put my XCIT trading profits into UMG. Less upside, but virtually no downside.
