Wow, that's some extreme stuff! The symptoms in my case weren't nearly so bad. Maybe because I'm working with a 300MHz Celeron? I am sure I even would have put up with it if not for the "view as web page" deal that I didn't realize you could shut off globally (until I got an answer on this thread). Mostly I just noticed that folders and programs took a little longer to open. I think with a faster processor I wouldn't even have noticed. It just really riled me that $Bill was forcing me to use the OS as a browser and it tweaked my paranoia. Then it turned out that it was my paranoia that came first -- you see what you want to see type of thing.

So, anyways, I'm pretty much reconciled with 98. Still using 95, though -- for me there's really not that much difference. I've learned to use hot keys to call up folders and programs which lessens the need for the "quick start" menu or the "show desktop" feature.

I have heard others describe things similar to your experience though -- people who are still using sub-200MHz processors. I have a 166 and a 233 -- someday I'll plug them in to 98 just to see what it's like.

Thanks for your comments,
wily

PS win98 has a special defragmenting option that organizes files on the disk so that programs and folders start faster and, in my experience, it makes a big difference. Strange that it is not needed for win95...
