The real problem, as you stated, is qwelling the demand from within. But that would require admitting that Americans are responsible for a problem, and force us to actually try to solve a social problem. MUCH easier (and more popular at home!) to blame it on other countries and damage or destroy their economies. After all, nobody who "matters" cares if a Columbian family loses its land because the US burned their crop and they can't pay their mortgage.
