Neocon, the funny thing is he probably doesn't realize that his hero Bill Clinton has been pushing for school uniforms since 94. One of the few issues I agree with him on.

The record since enacting school uniforms in the Long Beach School District have shown dramatic reductions in violence. Of course it's not a completely scientific study, due to other measures being taken at the same time, but the anecdotal evidence is pretty clear to anyone willing to put their ideological blinders aside.

Maslow was right, kids need a sense of belonging. If they can't get it at home, being part of the same social group at school could help. Uniforms help enhance this sense of belonging. Besides it's cheaper and simpler to wear uniforms.

There is so much to gain and so little to lose.

Michael

Yes, I know James Q. Wilson is a grey eminence on crime and punishment. But the dress code business would seem to be based on a superficial reading of the Littleton situation. The perps seem to have been fairly peripherally involved in the alleged trench coat mafia. And the tcm doesn't seem to have been much of a gang in the first place.

And yes, I remember your problem with the Eddie Bauer jackets. Somehow, I think you're reaching for generalizations here. Not that that's unusual, considering the variety of ways of blaming this on "liberals" that have been bandied about here. Wilson does deserve credit for rejecting most of the easy answers.
