Paul, according to TSMC, you can buy finished 8" wafers for just $1,250. Their annual report shows that they exported 842,280 8" wafers for a price of NT$ 34,468,771,000. Figuring $0.03US per NT$, at 100% yield the cost of silicon in a 100mm2 CPU would be about the same as a Big Mac(tm), fries and a Coke(tm).

Other than the issue of yields, did I miss something?

Thanks for the info. Does the "own" operations setup extend all the way to the fab? If so, who sources Vantis's PLDs?
