I don't recall ever having such trouble with fsck. Apparently you have, but without some context it's hard to comment. A big enough disk on a slow enough machine could talk half an hour, I suppose, but normally it's a pretty quick process requiring minimal intervention, in my experience. An obvious solution might be a UPS.

Please give us the context of which UNIX implementation requires a half an hour repair. Solaris? Sun OS? If not, why is it relevant in the thread? Are you saying that NTFS is just better than any UNIX implementation of file systems?
