Omnicaresays can't explain share price drop

NEW YORK, June 7 (Reuters) - Omnicare Inc. said Monday it could not explain why its stock sank about 21 percent in heavy trading.

The pharmaceutical care company was responding to a request from the New York Stock Exchange for a comment on the drop.

The Covington, Ky.-based company was the biggest loser on the New York Stock Exchange after its shares closed down $5 at $19 on volume of more than 2.98 million shares.

The daily trading volume of the company, which provides pharmacy and data management services to nursing homes and long-term care facilities, usually averages only about 400,000 shares.

''The company is not aware of the reason for the unusual volume and price decrease that occurred in its common stock on the Exchange today,'' the company said in a written statement.
