I would assume the neighbors have offered to pay, but that you graciously told them it's covered by insurance. And they must feel really terrible. I think you're absolutely right about not extracting a reciprocal pound of flesh. Good neighbors are to be treasured! That said, THEY should probably get rid of the dog voluntarily. It too easily could have been a child attacked--- and for their own sake, emotional and financial,they shouldn't take that chance. ANd a dog is just not worth that risk. Sometimes we get a little out of kilter in our thinking about pets,I think. They could take in an abused child and really do something admirable!
