James,

I'm afraid you don't quite understand the power of the U.S. military.

I don't blame you....I don't quite understand it either....but I have friends in Washington who do....and they quite assure me that today is one time when one can not look to history to teach us. One of our helicopters...just one....can destroy a whole battalion...or so I've been told. This is not the Germans invading in the 1940's....this is a whole new ballgame.

Guerilla fighting works at times, but only if supplies can be brought to the guerillas. Viet Nam had those supplies sent through the Ho Chi Minh Trail, (at least I think that was the trail), but tell me, what trail is going to supply the Serbians if they try to fight guerilla style? I'll tell you. There is none.

Juanita

P.S. Don't y'all DARE try and give us Quebec! We don't want it! <g>

James,

It appears the first Apache went down after hitting
a tree. I am starting to wonder about the usefulness
of these helicopters. I believe that as they were
originally envisioned, they would hover low while
firing hellfire missiles at Soviet tanks as they rumbled
West. During Desert Storm they were very effective due
to their FLIR scopes and could operate at night in the
smoke of the oil fires etc. Now however, they are
going to be tree hoping and trying to find targets
that all the while will be shooting back with SAM-10
shoulder fired IR rockets, RPGs, and AK-47 rounds. I
don't think they will help much because they simply
won't have anything to shoot at. The Serbs are not
stupid enough to move around in obvious military
vehicles, especially at night where the IR will put
them at a disadvantage. Its just like 'Nam where we
owned the skies but not the ground. We won every
battle due to superior firepower but lost the war
due to the images of massive destruction and graphic
violence on the 6 o'clock news.
