Unless something unexpected happens in the next month, Allen has little chance of being anything more than a niche player in the cable industry. He apparently held serious negotiations with MediaOne before Comcast announced its bid. He's still mentioned as a possible white knight to help Comcast with a counter offer to AT&T's bid. If that happens, then he'll be a major player. Without it, his will be a niche company.

No matter what happens, AT&T and @home will remain the major companies since they have so many customers with or without MediaOne.

My guess is that Allen is looking to provide solutions in the net/TV convergence area that are compelling enough that the major players (AT&T, TWX, Comcast, Cox) either buy out Allen's companies or license the technology.

In the meantime, he can use Go2Net to create the kind of compelling content that everyone wants to use no matter what kind of pipe and device they're using to get the data.

FYI-GNET bought www.haggle.com, an online auction site, last week.
