Here's a nice article that was posted recently to the ATHM thread. It does a good job of explaining why either MSFT or AOL would get involved in the Comcast/T-UMG deal, and notes "This is one of the most complicated chess games I've ever seen..."

Comcast considers agreements with Microsoft, America Online

For its part, Microsoft covets the franchise for supplying software systems for both digital television and high-speed Internet access. In addition, it is interested in denying AOL an exclusive deal to deliver Internet service to the cable companies' customers.

The story speculates that any agreement would probably be structured to give Comcast management rights to the cable companies while the technology partner would handle the internet-related parts.
