Craig, I did misunderstand you, sorry about that.

Few points, dicing, back end testing and packaging is far from "a small fee" for AMD. Some wafer "real state" is used up by dicing and packaging so simply dividing the area by the die size is not correct.

Also TSM has a very broad mix of products and services. Very little of their offering is comparable to the high cost associated with AMD's rather difficult and expensive 5 layer, 0.25 manufacturing.

All and all comparing TSM's wafer cost to AMD is misleading. AMD needs to produce $10,000/wafer to stay a float and that requires good yield and a good mix. I am guessing the processing and packaging cost for each wafer is around $5,000 for AMD, a far cry from TSM's.
