RE: CheckFree Adding New Billers Twist For Banks....

>>>Litan believes that in the next four to five years, "middlemen" like CheckFree will be marginalized by technology, leading to the post office model.

I disagree with his conclusion. Two things, 1. Handling the Payment 2. Pay-Anyone. 4 to 5 years from now who knows?, but many billers will be on-line, but many will not be (need for pay-anyone). In addition, Yahoo and others are going to need someone to handle the payment, customer care, etc., etc.

>>>But the role of consolidators like CheckFree may be short-lived in the market, perhaps opening an even bigger window for banks.

I have heard this statement for the last two years, but if anything, the market place has strengthened the need for a "CheckFree".

>>>Banks offering their own bill payment services, such as Bank of America, will have to follow suit to compete.

Which will kill BoA. BoA can not afford to be a technology company and a bank. Changes in products and services will put BoA further behind. This statement also conflicts with his "4 to 5" year theory, on one hand he says banks will have a hard time keeping up with Technology (need for CheckFree), on the other he says CheckFree will be marginalized by technology. Well, unless techonlogy stops advancing, I'll bet on CheckFree (i.e. Palm pilots, web phone, pay-anyone, POS, interactive bills, ???) Plus 4 to 5 years is too short. It has taken TransPoint 2 years just to present a few bills on their website.
