Jim, now I understand the core of our friendly disagreement about MTIs "multi host functionality", let me explain for the thread. You said pretty much MTI and DGN were the only ones that had it, I said everybody did.

First, all FC RAID engines allow you to separate the disks into logical partitions. Once you do that, you are free to add hosts as necessary to access the partitions. The hosts can be any reasonable mix of computers and operating systems. Multiple hosts can even do concurrent I/Os on the same partition, provided you have a locking manager that prevents apps from walking over each other's data.

In this sense I am correct in saying that MTI had nothing special here, and all modern FC RAID systems support multiple hosts.

MTI DOES bundle some additional functionality with their controllers which is certainly very useful. MTI can further control presentation of these logical partitions so that only selected computer(s) can access these partitions. This is the functionality that Jim was referring to.

However, this add-on feature can easily be accomplished by adding one of several software packages designed to do this. Vendors such as Charismac, Mercury, and Compass have such beasts. Veritas will also soon be shipping their product.

For those with equity positions in MTIC, I am glad for you, I hope you make a few bucks.
