Siemens Demonstrates Competitive Network Solutions at ALTS '99

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 27, 1999--Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. will feature total solutions for voice, data, video and multimedia applications at ALTS '99, the national convention of the Association for Local Telecommunications Services (ALTS).

ALTS '99 will be held May 3-5 at the Nashville Convention Center.

"At Siemens we recognize that business opportunities drive our customers' decision making, and we focus on how best to serve their needs," said Fred Fromm, president and CEO of Siemens Information and Communication Networks. "Our mission is to use our experience in information and communications to provide integrated solutions that help our customers add value to their networks."

Siemens Information and Communication Networks is a total solutions provider, offering products and services such as access networks, voice and data switching, transport solutions, Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) services, Voice over the Internet, asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) high-speed data access, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) and automated service provisioning.

Siemens will be showing products from Unisphere Solutions, a new Siemens company recently formed to provide products and services that address the need for converged voice/data and Internet Protocol-based networks. The company will provide innovative products and service solutions for service providers in need of converged network solutions.

Visitors to Booth No. 201 will see cost-effective, revenue-generating applications that can help emerging service providers compete and increase services to their customers. Highlights of the Siemens exhibit include:

Local and Long Distance Switching Solutions

A demonstration and network simulation will illustrate the EWSD(r) system's evolution strategy for a converged voice and data network.

Siemens' EWSD switch is a versatile, feature-rich system that can

be deployed as an end office switch, a tandem switch, a long

distance switch or any combination of these -- all on a single

platform. The EWSD platform is one of the most successful switches

in the world with more than 180 million lines installed.

Siemens' DCO(r) switch is a fully featured switch that is ideal for

serving the local and long distance needs of smaller inter-exchange

carriers and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs). Using AIN

features, service providers can offer enhanced custom features such

as debit card, international call back and personalized number

services.

Copper and Fiber Access Solutions

The FastLink(tm) system provides a range of narrowband and wideband

services from the public switched telephone network (PSTN) in

digital loop carrier (DLC), next generation digital loop carrier

(NGDLC), and fiber to the curb (FTTC) configurations. It can be

deployed standalone or with the XpressLink(r) solution for combined

narrowband and broadband services. FastLink (FTTC) can be equipped

for CATV and Ethernet data to provide a network platform capable of

delivering a complete suite of narrowband, wideband and broadband

services.

Siemens' XpressLink broadband access digital subscriber line (ADSL

and UDSL) system allows service providers to gain competitive

advantages by offering low-cost and rapid deployment of broadband

services over existing copper twisted pairs. XpressLink brings

network providers a future-proof service platform, allowing economic

deployment of broadband services, while securing a smooth and

cost-effective evolution from narrowband services provided by

FastLink. The platform is deployable in either a central office or

remote environment.

Transport Solutions The Siemens TransXpress(tm) ALine system is a multi-service fiber

optic transport product that combines synchronized optical network

(SONET) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology. The ALine

product has the ability to transmit narrowband and data signals, including broadband ATM. It also features multi-service access for

private networks and connections for individual subscribers at bit

rates from 64 Kb/s to 155 Mb/s.

Internet Solutions

Using the InterXpress IP telephony solution from Unisphere

Solutions, booth visitors will be able to create subscriber

accounts, place VoIP calls and view actual call detail records.

The comprehensive InterXpress solution consists of client software; interworking units (gateways and gatekeepers) that mediate traffic

between the IP network and the PSTN; network services servers that

authorize, authenticate route and rate IP telephony calls; and

management and customer care servers to provision, bill and operate

the service.

The InterXpress product line integrates the PSTN with the Internet

and IP-based networks by enabling phone-to-phone, PC-to-phone and

PC-to-PC communications over the Internet. Featured applications

include a PC-to-phone demonstration for call centers and

phone-to-phone demonstrations for debit card services. In addition, InterXpress customers can expand their revenue opportunities by

offering high-quality fax services to end users.
