Savant, As you are aware, all these compression schemes EPAC, MP3, AAC employ psycho-acoustic models to eliminate masked audio from the data stream. That's why I was surprised to see claims of a such a large difference in compression. I can see subtle differences in sub-band selection, redundancy coding etc giving rise to small differences in overall compression, but not 10 times - even 3 or 4 seems a lot. But I'm not an audio expert and was wondering if I missed something here. Anyway, your VHS/Beta analogy is apt, quality and compression are only part of the picture. Also EDIG, with its patent position, may be a significant player in this business regardless of the ultimate choice(s) of standard.
