Showing up for work was my first mistake. It was the day after a holiday, we had two day's worth of mail, and I was running late. I got to this particular house a bit after 5 pm. The house is a rural delivery, maybe a hundred yards away from where the mailbox is, It's enclosed with a chain link fence. This dude is a schoolteacher who gets big packages of books all the time. I drive them up to his gate, park the truck, let myself into the yard through the gate, and walk the packages around the corner of the house to his porch.

This time Mr Schoolteacher was already home from work, and he had let his dog out. I wasn't aware that a dog even lived here. I'd been in the yard a dozen times before without seeing any sign of one. I spotted the hound when I rounded the corner of the house, and he ran straight at me, full speed, as soon as he spotted me. I shoved the parcel at him and he jumped right over it, biting me on the wrist as he crashed into me. That bite hurt enough to distract me, and he got behind me and then really bit. I whirled in a circle with the damned dog clamped onto my leg. He tore a real nice gash in my leg, good definition of the teeth and all. I was really pissed, both at being bit and because of the paperwork nightmare that results. Plus it meant that it would be hours before I would get to go home, I'd have to go to the doctor, I'd be getting a letter of warning for getting bit. It sucked, all of it.
