Not true. Intel processors are generally at 99% yield within minutes of first tapeout. The missing 1% is because of the contractor night guard smoking in the clean room. Had he been a full time Intel employee, they would be at 100% yield, every time.

NO !

Case in point - Mendocino Celeron !

Intel (Andy Grove) demoed First Silicon in Taiwan in April/May of last year - within days of the first wafers coming out of fab.

Intel uses standard (for Intel that is) verification and reliability testing to be sure - which do consume time.

But when Intel hits the PRODUCTION Button, look out ! The chips strat rolling off that "assembly line" !

By the way - add DIXON to that list - except Intel spent some extra time in speed optimization to insure 366 MHz operation at 1.6 volts.
