SoftQuad Software Inc. Announces New Equity Partners and Board of Directors

TORONTO, Ontario, April 27 /CNW/ -- SoftQuad Software Inc. today
announced that Pinetree Capital Corp., in conjunction with its merchant
banking affiliate KBL Capital Partners and James Clark, has lead the funding
of a first round of private equity for the company. It was also announced
that Sheldon Inwentash, Chairman and CEO of Pinetree, has joined Clark and
Roberto Drassinower on the SoftQuad Software Inc. board of directors.
"We are extremely pleased to achieve this important milestone in our
corporate development plan and excited by the opportunity to work with such
experienced partners as Pinetree, KBL and Mr. Clark," said Drassinower, CEO
and President of SoftQuad Software Inc. "The addition of such high caliber
financial, business and technical expertise to our team will significantly
contribute to achieving our goals and vision."
SoftQuad Software was incorporated in November 1998 through a management
buyout of the assets of the Web publishing division of SoftQuad International
with a mandate to create high-quality XML and HTML authoring tools. SoftQuad
Software released the latest version of its award-winning HoTMetaL PRO 5.0 in
September 1998 and then focused its efforts on the rapidly expanding XML
marketplace with its newest product offering XMetaL, to be released in May.
As corporations begin to recognize that their business information or
content is a key corporate asset, they are looking for easy-to-use tools that
leverage the latest technologies. The Gartner Group projects that XML will
become the dominant technology in supporting corporate publishing
architectures by the first half of 2000, with a seven-fold increase in market
penetration by 2002. According to CAP Ventures Inc., the content management
sector -- which includes companies such as Vignette, Documentum and Inso -- is
growing at a 94% annual rate, and spending for software tools alone topped
$1 billion in 1998.
XMetaL is an advanced XML authoring tool that delivers unprecedented ease
of use to authors, while shielding them from the complexities of XML.
XMetaL's familiar, word processing-like authoring environment dramatically
reduces training and implementation costs. Its powerful customization
capabilities streamline the publishing process and eliminate expensive
ongoing conversion costs. Whether creating content for technical
publications, content management, knowledge management, online publishing, or
other applications that could benefit from XML, content creators will value
XMetaL's ease of use and IT professionals will appreciate its simple
deployment capabilities.
