AAPL's acquisition of the Palm from COMS would be detrimental. AAPL is just coming back and needs to focus on its existing business strengthening its market share both at home and overseas. The Newton was discontinued precisely because, among other reasons, it was diverting management attention.

"AAPL not mentioned per se, but those rumored to be interested in acquiring COMS have no use for Palm."

My thoughts exactly. There is no way that Apple will buy the entire 3Com which currently has a market cap of over $9 billion. However if one of these networking giants buys COMS, I think it becomes very likely for Palm to up for sale.
