Meathead,

I am backing out the unit sales from the DELL Q4 report.
I just divide the 2350 into the revenues to get the units.
It comes out to be 2.201 M units. I am assuming that that this ASP
includes storage is a mixed number which includes storage systems, etc.

Good observation on the $50 granularity. It looks like a ~2% precision error.

The problem with using the IDC number is that they frequently correct it up to 6 weeks after the end of the quarter. So the number they initially reported for Q4 may well have been updated by now.
IDC and Dataquest do not really tell you they changed the numbers because they do not want to draw attention to the error. So I am not sure if one way is more precise than the other.

Probably just have to calculate it both ways.

Gabriel can tell you what the latest number is for DELL in Q4 when IDC deigns to give him his new IDC numbers.

I also use an Excell spreadsheet with server, notebook, desktop, workstation, and external storage systems units. Then I try to get the product ASP times the product units to match the overall revenue numbers and percentages that are published. It's not perfect but it gives me a feel for the product mix and trends.

Regards,

Jim Kelley
