Another thing the article mentioned was congestion. By their nature satellite systems will be used as a first choice only when cheaper services aren't available. This means that while the satellites may cover most of the earth, even under the best circumstances some areas will get lots of use and others almost none. For instance the area over China will get much more use than an even bigger geographical area over the South Pacific. For real heavy usage to occur, a combination of poor phone service and people rich enough to afford the service will be needed. An example today is all the media people in Albania.
I don't own any GSTRF, so I'm neutral, but trying to learn while awaiting some dreadful news event about Iridium that might be a good entry point for possible GSTRF purchase.

<<You better bet your butt if I am an executive at a corporation and I see my first few Iridium bills at the current rates, the memo's will fly as to only using sat mode when absolutely neccesary, or else!>>

That's a great ad idea, Goodboy! The exec is smoking out of the ears about the high bill and some Assistant-Assistant-Vice-Supervisor tells him what the bill would have been for the various calls using G*. Next shot shows the formerly A-A-V-S now CFO picking out the leather furniture for his (or her) new corner office and inquiring about color options on the company Beamer that's being delivered. ; )
