What if the 5 O'clock news reports the possible real danger of huge loss of data around the world because of the Y2K problem,and closes with urging to back up as soon as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a significant increase in the tie ratios over the next few weeks, especially if this one becomes more widespread.
Two nights ago my next door neighbor said as soon as she heard about this she immediately backed up her essential files on a zip disk (something she knows she should do, but rarely gets around to). She also said she had some very large files that were going to require quite a few zip disks.
