If you give them $20,000 US you trade without exchange rate compensation to them as long as you stick with stocks traded on US exchanges with US$. If you trade stocks in Canadian dollars they will hit you with exchange rate charges similar to banks charge when you convert currencies,....except the charges are generally higher,...even double the banks, both ways.

Bottom line,...trade with a US broker for you US stocks or Canadian stocks listed on US exchanges and enjoy fast trades, but look for more difficult tax return reporting. Use a Canadian based broker for your Canadian $ stock trades,....you just have to find a fast one if that is possible.

For those of you who think you have a fast one,...first try and trade at around 9:30 am...market open, or near 4:00 pm...market close before telling me how great your service is. Tell us how many minutes from the time you input the transaction, to the time the trade actually occurred,..confirmed by a broker or your online order status. Having tried several bank brokers now, none are up to the task. 10 to 20 minute service at peak times are the norm for Canadian Brokerages, even on market orders because they do not have enough people reviewing and approving trades (a requirement in Canada) to ensure fast service. Even when the order is approved, the trader actually trading the stock may take their own sweet time to input and make the trade.

russett, burnt many times.

edit, I see I should have read the last two responses as they answered the questions I just answered.
