I was following the heavy action on BIDS this morning as it was climbing from 20 to 22+ with volume around 300,000 shares per minute. I use myTrack, which is a direct data provider. I had no ticker running except for BIDS itself, no dynamic T/S, and no L2 screens, just some tables more or less like RealTick Market Minders for about 40 stocks, not a huge bandwith load. I believe my bids were pretty accurate, but they were leading the prints by about 1/2 to 3/4 points during a very steady climb. Time and sales shows this history. My guess is that there was a huge backlog of prints that could not keep up with the market action, possibly all the way back to NASD.

I'm inclined to agree with you that it's not Nasdaq's fault for a couple reasons: 1) At any other time during the day I can be pulling an equally heavy or heavier data load and not have out-of-sync quotes. Very often, when this happens at the open, it's not even a stock that is trading heavily. 2) I noticed that someone who uses the same firm as me has posted that his quotes are out of sync but reverse to mine: his Level II lags, whereas in my case it is T/S that lags. I use RR cable internet and have very good trace-routes (at least they seem good to me).
