(COMTEX)B: NBASE-XYPLEX: NBase-Xyplex announces shipment of GigaSwitch Routers

APR 27, 1999, M2 Communications - NBase-Xyplex, a leading provider of
high-speed networking solutions and a division of MRV Communications
Inc., today announced the shipment of the GFS3016 Switch Router. The
GFS3016 is a new modular Gigabit Switch Router that is the first
product on the market to integrate Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing
(CWDM)* and Gigabit Ethernet.

The GFS3016 is the newest member of the GigaFrame Switch (GFS) family
architecture. Ideally suited for Metropolitan Area Networks with
long-distance links (20km), the GFS3016 is a powerful switch capable of
supporting high-bandwidth applications. These include Gigabit Ethernet
and ATM backbones for Metropolitan Networks and Service Providers, both
of which can be combined over CWDM technology.

The six-slot modular design of the GFS3016 can support a maximum port
density of 16-Gigabit Ethernet ports, 62 10/100Base-TX ports or 32
100Base-FX ports. The GFS3016 architecture consists of dual control
modules, which provide redundancy in the switching fabric and within
the system control unit, and redundant power supplies. It offers both
layer 2 switching and layer 3 routing and provides more than 2 million
packets per second of IP routing with full support for standard routing
protocols such as OSPF and RIP. Availability and Pricing

The GFS3016 Switch Router will be available mid-May. List price
starts at GBP 6,745 for a base configuration.

"The new GFS3016 Switch Router is designed from the outset with a
high level of resilience and redundancy. It includes a flexible set of
interface modules and a powerful hardware-based routing engine,
providing customers a smooth migration path to the world of Gigabit
routing," said Ofer Iny, VP Engineering, NBase-Xyplex. "CWDM is a very
promising technology, and we believe it makes WDM affordable for
implementation within Metropolitan Networks," added Iny.

Future support for ATM-OC3 within the GFS3016, with its versatile
traffic shaping and accounting capabilities, will provide unique
connectivity between 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet LANs and the WAN. It
extends the IP Routing capabilities of the GFS3016, connecting
high-speed intranets to the Internet.

About CWDM

Coarse WDM is establishing itself as a low-cost alternative to Dense
WDM for 0-20 km distances.

These applications include campus backbone and Metropolitan Area
Networks (MANs). CWDM is a less expensive technology because the
wavelengths do not need to be within an optical amplifier window; this
allows uncooled DFB laser and simpler passive components can be used.
CWDM systems usually have a 20-nm wavelength separation and cover the
range from 1260 to 1620 nm.

This results in about 16 usable channels, depending on the
limitations due to the absorption peak at 1400 nm. Like DWDM, CWDM can
be upgraded at any time without affecting existing hardware.

About NBase-Xyplex

With more than 17 years' experience as a world-class leader in data
networks, NBase-Xyplex uses its leading-edge products and services to
enhance network infrastructures for enterprise and carrier customers.
Leveraging its industry-leading optical expertise along with its broad
range of switches, routers and access servers, NBase-Xyplex provides
enlightened solutions for long-distance fibre- based LANs, remote
network access, and network control and management. With a track record
of several industry firsts, including the first multi-protocol terminal
server, first 10/100 autosensing switch, first Gigabit Ethernet and
first Linux-based router, the company is continuing to build on its
commitment to smarter networks. As a member of the Optical
Interoperability Forum, a consortium charged with accelerating
deployment of advanced optical networks, NBase-Xyplex is bringing to
market an entirely new network architecture, combining CWDM, DWDM and
Gigabit switching to deliver high-bandwidth metro-networks at a
fraction of the cost of today's solutions.
