All:

AOL has been good to me. But...

Screw the stock split, what about AOL's solution to its broadband problems. Addressing the need for viable, cost-effective broadband capabilities seems to be AOL's one main miscalculation over the last couple of years.

DSL will not be the answer, not on large-scale basis anyway. Based on some of my telecomm clients experiences, DSL is an engineering nightmare in metropolitan areas. They've told of serious degradation in quality when several lines employing DSL are in close proximity with one another, not to mention the degradation of quality as the end user moves further and futher away from the baby bell substations. Many telecom experts have described DSL as a technology better suited for the lab then the field. Even AOL itself is giving indications that DSL ain't the answer. If it was, they'd be signing up SBC-type DSL deals all over the country instead of the couple of representative, public relations-based deals they've signed.

So, as a long-time holder of AOL, I sit waiting for real answers to the biggest problem AOL is currently facing (and should have been addressing 2 years ago). What will it be? Venture with Road Runner? Direct partnerships with cable companies? A purchase of a cable company? Ventures with wireless providers? Me thinks someone was caught napping at the wheel on this threshold issue. Time to do some catching up with a bold initiative or two.
