On first reading the Quantum results look pretty good. Certainly, with all the recent concerns of poor PC shipments it would've been easy for them have a worse report in this.

They've increased market share in the desktop, and say they have a profitable business there. They've also increased market share in the high-end, but continue to lose money there. At some stage you have to wonder what will happen as they transition away from the Big Foot platform. If it could be said that this quarter shows they can be successful with smaller form hard drives the desktop that would be worth knowing.

Still, the lion's share of growth in earnings come from non-hard drive business. So do we say they did very well with DLT? Perhaps more important as the question, what's going to happen with SDLT?

Anyway, the interesting stuff will come out of the conference call. I hope will get some posts about what's said. Also, I continue to be on the watch for any concern over Y2K creating anomalies in the sales pattern.

Regards, Mark
